Make your Outdoors Festive in 2020
This year has been anything short of normal.
Festivities indoors during the holiday season for 2020 may be minimal and scarce. Yet from my networking research, people this year are searching for ways to spark joy during the holiday season, even if just for themselves.
Here are three reasons why it may be the best year ever to make your outdoor decor shimmer and sparkle a little more this year.
Get an Early Bird start on Spring maintenance!
While the world is spending more time at home, there are cost-free ways to improve the look of your home outdoors for the holiday season and winter months. Cutting back shrubs and dead limbs and freeing up the clutter from the fall weather will be noticed when people walk or drive by your home. Taking a little more effort to winterize your home with storage, required removal and equipping your home for the winter maintenance chores that may arise (yes, like shovelling) can exude a manicured home feel despite the season. Snow can add some refreshing sparkle after all the dead leaves of November but can also create a mess. Invest on an absorbent mat you will enjoy stomping your boots for the coming months.
Prepare for a Staging Strategy
Even if your home is not currently for sale or you don’t foresee a real estate experience, this unprecedented year has taught us that so much can change in an instant. I always advise clients to style their home as if it is still a staging strategy. Create a pretty entrance that is warm and inviting, regardless of whether guests are entering or not.
We never know when you may have a potential buyer spot your home and remember how they felt looking at it. Even if you do not have a home for sale or planned for sale, you may lead a buyer to you one day based on what you style your outdoors for today.
People often look at a home with a new lens when it is holiday-decorated, or added elements have had them take notice. Sometimes houses are sold by the outside appearance without even seeing within. And it appears nothing is slowing down about the market and the low-interest rates as the New Year rolls in. You just never know where your life decisions will lead you.
Spread Joy
If for no other reason, we can all use a little pick-me-up or shine in our lives to finish this year. Twinkle lights are a magnet for sparking joy. They create a warm and inviting elegance like nothing else.
One year I heard of an anonymous holiday card dropped off at a beautiful home, lit up for the holidays that said,
“I drive by your home every day on the way home, and your lit-up house always makes me know I am close to home. It looks like a gingerbread cottage that warms my heart. It is the most beautiful Christmas home to me. Thank you.”
One thing that is for sure - drive-bys and car rides are a new source of entertainment, celebrating and coping this year. Investing a little more spunk and vigour into making drive-by guests smile is reason enough to invest time into your outdoors this holiday season.
Whether you are staging your home for a sale now or the coming year has you thinking about a move, you will be making outdoor first impressions that matter right now.
